Summer Time ! The Sultry and Scorching Season !

There were days when summer was all about outdoor fun trips to beaches, cottages, hikes in woods, trekking, meals cooked on grills. Today when we think of Summer , things that come to our mind are sunstrokes/heatstroke, dehydration, overexertion, scarcity of water. Due to gradual rise in temperature day by day, people mostly prefer to stay indoors instead of venturing out in the scorching sun. If this is the case of Humans, imagine the situation about the animals and birds out there.

Birdwatching is one of the favorite activities people love during Summer Time. But the deadly heat can take a toll on not just for the bird watchers but also the birds themselves. Inadequate amount of water can result into overexertion, dehydration, heatstroke.

Birdwatching Activity is not only done in zoos or national parks or sanctuaries but also at our homes specially if our home is located in locality having good ample of trees and plants. Especially in morning when you peep out of window or go on to your terrace you see birds chirping; or a flock of birds passing over your terrace; or  crows, pigeons and sparrows searching for their food; or birds sitting on branches of trees and you get to see many other types of birds around your home. Even they struggle for water and food just like we do in these deadly hot summers. A small initiative taken by us might make their day and struggle easy.

Keeping water in unused pots or utensils in the backyards or terrace or balconies might help birds around your place to cool themselves and quench their thirst to some extent. Feeders are also a plus point along with providing water to satisfy their hunger. Feeders and water cans or pots of wide mouths can be kept in shade wherever little place is available and easily accessible for birds. Similarly, you can place water in small wide mouth cans and left over food outside your homes or gate, so that street dogs and cats and other animals which pass by can benefit from it.

This little act of humanity might save any animal's life. Saving an animal may not change the world but for that animal the world changes forever.

With increase in areas struggling with scarcity of water/droughts, Water Conservation has become very crucial. Few initiatives can  add upto hundreds of gallons in water saving each year.

Below are few tips which we can take initiative to save every drop of water:
1.Repair all the taps having leakage.
2.Switch off the borewell before tank starts overflowing.
3.Water left after washing vegetables and fruits can be used for plants at home.
4.Better to plan for Rain Harvesting techniques while constructing Homes. Water saved from this technique can be utilized for gardens, plants, trees.
5.Turn off the tap while brushing and scrubbing your hands with soap.
6.Switch off lights and fans and electronic devices when not in used.
7.Water Plants in early morning which results in less evaporation.
8.Educate family members, children and friends regarding utilization, consumption, conservation of water.
8. If using Air conditioners, put a pot or vessel to save the water that drips down the tube. Below is the snapshot which shows water droplets from air conditioner tube dripping in to the pot. The water accumulated in the pot can be used for birds, animals, plants, or for washing purposes.

Last but not the Least , do take care of yourself too from this deadly heatwaves taking toll around by keeping yourself hydrated and avoiding going out in mid noons.
